DETECTION FROM LONG RANGEThe main sonar sensor of the submarines is bow array sonar; the forms of array are spherical or cylindrical. The array aperture of these sonars are narrow and generally operate higher frequency than 1 kHz. In the FAS sensor, since the receiving hydrophones are mounted along the submarine hull, the array aperture increases, thus, high detection performance is obtained by operating at low frequency.
INCREASED ARRAY APERTUREFlank array sonar sensors mounted symmetrically on the port and starboard side of the submarines provide excellent detection characteristics at low frequencies thanks to the icreased array aperture.
